Getting started
How do I install Paperly?
Open any Google Doc. Go to Extensions → Add-ons → Get add-ons. Search for Paperly and click Install. Once installed, open it via Extensions → Paperly → Open Paperly.
Does Paperly work on Google Slides or Sheets?
No. Paperly is built specifically for Google Docs.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required for formatting checks — those run automatically in the sidebar. You will need to sign in with Google to purchase and use credits for AI Rubric Check and Plagiarism Scan.
Formatting checks
Why aren't issues being highlighted in my document?
Make sure Paperly has permission to modify your document. If you declined the permission during install, uninstall and reinstall the add-on. Formatting checks run every 3 seconds while the sidebar is open.
What exactly does the formatting check look for?
Double spaces, informal contractions (don't, can't, it's), consecutive duplicate words, sentences over 60 words, inconsistent font size or family across body paragraphs, line spacing below 1.5×, and missing required sections (Abstract, Introduction, Methodology, Conclusion, References).
Can I fix issues automatically?
Yes. Double spaces and consecutive duplicate words can be fixed with one click using the auto-fix button next to the flagged issue. Other issues require manual correction.
AI Rubric Check
How do I use the AI Rubric Check?
Paste your adviser's criteria into the text box in the Paperly sidebar, one criterion per line. Click Check with AI. Paperly reads your full document and returns a result for each criterion: ✅ Met, ⚠️ Partially Met, or ❌ Not Met, with a quoted excerpt from your document as evidence.
How accurate is the AI check?
The check is powered by Claude, a large language model. Results are generally reliable for well-defined criteria but may be incomplete for vague or subjective ones. Always treat it as a drafting aid, not a final verdict.
How many credits does it use?
1 credit per run, regardless of document length.
Plagiarism scan
What databases does the plagiarism scan check against?
OpenAlex, CrossRef, and arXiv — over 250 million published academic papers and preprints.
Does it check against other students' work?
No. The scan only checks against publicly available academic publications. It does not have access to unpublished student papers, institutional repositories, or Turnitin's database.
What do the colours mean?
Red means over 80% similarity with a source. Orange means 50–80%. Yellow means below 50%. All three are flagged so you can review them.
Can I paraphrase flagged text inside Paperly?
Yes. Click on any flagged match in the sidebar and select Paraphrase with AI. A suggested rewrite appears in the sidebar for you to copy or apply.
How many credits does it use?
1 credit per run.
Credits
Do credits expire?
No. Credits never expire. Buy what you need and use them whenever you're ready.
What happens if a check fails?
If the check fails due to a server-side error on our end, your credit is refunded automatically.
Can I get a refund on unused credits?
Credits are non-refundable once purchased. If you have an issue, contact us and we'll do our best to help.
