Overview
Paperly is a Google Docs Add-on built by Presdin Works LLC. We take a minimal approach to data: your document content is never stored — it is processed in memory for the requested feature and immediately discarded.
Google API Limited Use Disclosure
Paperly's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Google user data is used solely to provide the features described in this policy and is never used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the app's core functionality.
Permissions Paperly requests
Paperly requests the following Google permissions:
- Read document content — required to run formatting checks, AI rubric review, plagiarism scans, and paraphrase suggestions.
- Modify document content — required to highlight flagged issues and apply auto-fixes inside your document.
- Display sidebar UI — required to show the Paperly sidebar inside Google Docs.
- Your email address (Google identity) — required to identify your account, manage your subscription status, and track free run usage.
Live Formatting Checks
All eight formatting checks (double spaces, contractions, duplicate words, long sentences, font size, font family, line spacing, and missing sections) run entirely inside the Google Docs sidebar. Your document text is never sent to our servers for this feature. No account or internet connection is required.
AI Rubric Check
When you run an AI Rubric Check, the following data is sent over HTTPS to our backend:
- Your full document text
- The criteria you entered for evaluation
This data is forwarded to the Anthropic Claude API to generate the rubric evaluation. It is not stored after the response is returned.
Plagiarism Scan
When you run a Plagiarism Scan, your full document text is sent over HTTPS to our backend, which compares it against public academic databases (OpenAlex, CrossRef, and arXiv). Your text is not submitted to those databases in a way that makes it publicly accessible. The text is discarded after the scan completes.
Paraphrase Suggestions
When you request a paraphrase suggestion for a flagged sentence, that sentence (and a small amount of surrounding context) is sent over HTTPS to our backend and forwarded to the Anthropic Claude API to generate an alternative phrasing. The text is not stored after the response is returned.
Account and subscription data
Paperly uses your Google identity (email address) to:
- Identify your account and manage your subscription status
- Track your remaining free runs for AI and plagiarism features
- Link your account to a Stripe subscription if you subscribe to Paperly Pro
We do not sell, rent, or share your email address with any third party except as described in this policy. It is never used for marketing or advertising.
Third-party services
The following third-party services are used by Paperly:
- Anthropic Claude API — receives document text for AI Rubric Check and paraphrase requests. Subject to Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
- OpenAlex, CrossRef, arXiv — public academic databases queried during plagiarism scans. Your text is used only for matching and is not stored by these services on your behalf.
- Stripe — processes subscription payments for Paperly Pro. Your Google identity is used to link your account to a Stripe customer record. Subject to Stripe's Privacy Policy.
- Google Cloud Run — backend infrastructure hosted on Google Cloud that processes all AI and plagiarism requests.
Data retention
- Document text — never stored. Sent per-request and discarded after processing.
- Free run counters — retained to track your remaining complimentary uses of AI and plagiarism features.
- Subscription and billing records — retained by Stripe as required to manage your subscription and comply with financial regulations.
- Google identity — retained to associate your account with subscription status and free run usage.
